This dataset comes from VGCharts website and covers historical sales of video games (for games that sold more than 10,000 copies) spanning different platforms, genres, and publishing studios.
Data exploration was initially conducted in Excel, including data cleaning, grouping & summarizing, descriptive analyses and visualization.
1) Foundational statistics were calculated to understand the data (left): Outliers were identified using Interquartile Range (IQR): Value < Q1 – (IQR * 1.5) or Value > Q3 + (IQR * 1.5)
2) A pivot table was made to summarize the total sales of each genre in different regions (right).
Results were visualized in Excel and a presentation was prepared in Powerpoint to answer business questions.
1) Sales (in millions) and the proportion of global sales (%) in North America became the highest among regions starting in 1996.
2) The proportion of global sales (%) in Europe steadily increased over time and surpassed that in Japan since 1997.
3) Action, Shooter and Sports were top 3 selling game genres on a global scale, both exclusively in 2016 and throughout the period from 2014 to 2016.
